My First Organic Vegetable Garden

sOL Back Page LOGO.jpg

Forgive me, these are true snapshots taken with an ancient Kodak camera.

Still, I'm proud of my wife Roberta, our son Brian, and my garden. Each planting bed was dug down 4 ft and filled with compost I mined from nearby hardwood forests. The bricks were salvaged from demolished buildings from the late 19th Century. This was a Bio-Intensive garden. Today it would be called square foot gardening. Every inch of bed was carefully planned and planted for maximum yield. Each winter, I would grow 250 seedlings, in 4 in. square pots, under lights with snow outside. In late spring, they all had to be "hardened off". Up from the basement, set out into the warming sun, then put away each evening. Make no mistake, it takes a lot of work to be a dedicated organic gardener.

Many nights after dinner, Brian and I would fill a basket and share our bounty with neighbors on the block.

Very fond memories indeed.
