What You Need To Know About How Plants Work

Is In This Quick Guide, Including . . .

Spout Watering.jpg

SEED Nearly all plants are born from a single seed.

Beans, corn, watermelon, and even coconuts, are seeds you know about. When a seed becomes moist and warm, it will SPROUT.

SOIL Seeds need a bed of soil to put down roots.

Soil (dirt) can be in your backyard, garden or even a pot.

Soil holds moisture (water), and nutrients (food) for the seed.

WATER Water softens seeds so they can sprout.

Warm sunshine, mixed with just the right amount of water,

is what the seed needs to begin its germination.

Bean Germinating.jpg

GEMINATION The magic happens when

the seed spits open and out pops a baby plant ready to

set down a root and raise its tender head.

Sun.jpg

SUN The Sun, and it's sunlight, will warm the soil.

The seed will feel this warmth and it will know it's OK to sprout.

It could take days, weeks, or even months to get warm enough.

You Have A Garden !

Planting All Together.jpg

Let Me Give You A Little Inspiration.

I Started Gardening When I Was 8.

I lived across the street from a man who gardened his little slice of heaven on about 5 acres of semi-rural property in Sacramento, California. Mr. May had everything from rose, vegetable, and flower gardens,

to fruit and olive orchards. Mr. May was very accommodating to the little boy from across the street.

I spent hours shadowing Mr. May around his place, asking questions, making mental notes, and scurrying across the street to try my hand in

my parent's anemic yard.

Eventually, I got so good at applying Mr. May's know-how that I won the consent of my Mother to tend her flower beds; and my Dad gave me a vegetable garden plot in the corner of our backyard. I didn't know then that I was attracted to the science of the whole thing, but I could see the results and was very proud of the increase in blooms for my Mom, and the vegetable production that even I could appreciate as abundant. I was hooked.

Others can be hooked too ! I will try in these pages to be like Mr. May. Together, we will explore how plants work, how you can be a parent to the seeds you plant and care for your seedlings all the way to when they are grown up.

I have helpers in my Garden. They are my Nieces and Nephew,

Olivia, Daniel

and Little Hanna.

They will be helping me to be your " Mr. May " as we go along.
